Computational Systems Biology Research Group

Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland

The CSB, led by Professor Olli Yli-Harja, is located at the Tampere University of Technology's Institute of Signal Processing, and is dedicated to development and application of modeling and simulation tools for studying complex biological phenomena. The team combines experts from different fields - cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, signal and image processing, statistics, mathematics, and computer science.

Research Topics Currently Explored at the CSB

  • Bayesian statistical methods
  • Integrative analysis of -omics data
  • Image analysis for high-content cellular imaging
  • Regulatory networks
  • Signal transduction

Ongoing international exchange:

The CSB at Tampere University of Technology enjoys a long-standing cooperation with the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. Student exchange and collaborative research is ongoing, and areas of focus include microfluidics, image processing, and data analysis and integration.

Another long-term collaboration is with Cancer Genomics Core Laboratory at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which includes joint projects in cancer research.

Joint research in complex system dynamics and differentiation therapy is ongoing through cooperation with the Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics at the University of Calgary. The head of the institute, Stuart A. Kauffman, holds a FIDIPRO professor position within the CSB at Tampere.

Additional collaborators with the CSB in research include include Prof. Erik De Schutter, Computational Neuroscience Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan; Prof. Roberto Serra, the Centro Ricerche e Servizi Ambientali Fenice, Italy; Prof. Fred Biddle, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Calgary, Canada; Prof. Korbinian Strimmer, University of Leipzig, Germany; Prof. Carl Hansen, Center for High-Throughput Biology, University of British Columbia, Canada; Prof. Lucas Pelkmans, Institute of Molecular Systems Biology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland; Prof. Carsten Wiuf, Bioinformatics Research Center (BiRC), Aarhus University, Denmark; and Prof. Peter Andrews, Department of Biomedical Science, The University of Sheffield, UK.

Funding opportunities:
